Whether you are a beginner or a serious Scrabble player, this is the starting point for all you need to know about Scrabble in India. The Scrabble Association of India unites Scrabble players across the country and conducts regular events and tournaments in different cities.
At present, we have our members concentrated in centres such as Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Goa, Vadodara and Kolkata. However, we are always looking at spreading across different cities in India through promotion and events.

*Samrath clinches Vadodara Open for his maiden title*![]()

The battle for the 2026 Vadodara Open went into the final round, where Samrath Singh Bhatia prevailed over defending champion Varisht Hingorani to record his first ever major title victory. Samrath finished with 18 wins from 24 rounds, and was followed by Varisht (17) and A Krishnan (16) on the podium.![]()

Held at the Fairfield by Marriott from 17th to 19th July, the tournament's Open Division featured 44 players, with prizes given under A and B categories. In Category B, the top three finishers were Rekha Balaji, Hyder Quraishi, and Archana Aggarwal.![]()

There was also a one-day newbie division, which saw eight budding Scrabble enthusiasts from the city. Young Hrehaan Mehta, who recently qualified from Vadodara for the All-India School Championship later this year, emerged as the winner.![]()

There were nail-biting finishes, high-scoring games, unbelievable bingos, and plenty of strategic battles across the weekend. Every round had its share of surprises, with racks turning into game-changing words and close contests going right down to the final moves.![]()

The 2026 Vadodara Open was indeed a celebration of Scrabble, which highlighted the hard-fought tussles across the board and the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie among the players in equal measure. The 2026 Chennai Open, which marked the return of competitive Scrabble in Chennai after more than a decade, was held from 26th to 28th June at the E-Hotel, Royapettah. Organised jointly by the Madras Scrabble Foundation (MSF) and the Karnataka State Scrabble Association (KSSA), the internationally-rated tournament featured 56 players of varying ages from across India and overseas in the Open Division, who were divided into two categories A and B on the basis of their ratings. Besides, there were separate one-day tournaments for school, college, and beginner players, featuring another 75 players.![]()

Reigning world youth champion Madhav Gopal Kamath, aged 15, produced yet another remarkable performance to secure the gruelling 23-round Open Division title, with the battle going into the final round. The Delhi-based Grandmaster won 17 out of 23 games to add to his rising collection of silverware, edging out Aditya Iyengar of Mumbai and fellow Grandmaster Thacha Koowirat of Thailand into second and third position respectively. ![]()

Narrowly missing out on the podium was 2017 world champion and India’s current highest-ranked player, Grandmaster Akshay Bhandarkar, who finished fourth. Samarth Manchali from Bangalore, aged just 12, gave an indication of his ability by finishing fifth, while Chennai's Ranganathan Chakravarthy, coach to many upcoming juniors from Chennai, made a strong comeback to competitive Scrabble by finishing sixth. In Category B, Chennai’s Jyoti Budhia stood first.![]()

The Schools Division, which was the regional qualifier for the All-India School Championship, was won by Srihari S from Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, with KP Malai Vijesh from KSN Senior Secondary School in second place; ensuring that both qualified for the next round. The College Division was won by Abhyuday from IIT Madras, while the Beginner Division was won by Sivaraman K from Bangalore.![]()

Thanks to the efforts of J Meghanatha Reddy from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and Mohan Chunkath, IAS; a former national champion and Chennai's most accomplished Scrabble player, the tournament received a sponsorship of INR 5,00,000 from the SDAT – a notable landmark for the progress of Indian Scrabble. This support made the event a grand success. Besides trophies and cash prizes for the top finishers, with the top prize being INR 1,00,000, various category prizes and prizes for exceptional words were awarded.![]()

India's Scrabble contingent delivered an impressive performance at the Causeway Challenge 2026, the largest and arguably the toughest international Scrabble tournament, held in Bangkok, Thailand from 29th May to 1st June.![]()

The tournament attracted 450 players from over 30 countries, featured a total prize pool of USD 70,000, and saw each player contest 36 rounds over four days at the Miracle Grand Convention Hotel. ![]()

Based on WESPA ratings, the tournament field was divided into five divisions, i.e. Premier Division and Divisions 1 to 4. India was represented by a 50-member contingent, the second largest after hosts Thailand.![]()

India's standout performer was A. Krishnan of Chennai, who won Division 1 and earned prize money of USD 5000. Seeded 36th, he put in a remarkable display to secure the coveted title with 25 wins.![]()

In the elite Premier Division, 15-year-old Madhav Gopal Kamath of Delhi, the reigning World Youth Champion and the world's youngest Scrabble Grandmaster, secured an outstanding eighth-place finish. He was closely followed by Aditya Iyengar of Mumbai, who was seeded 44th and finished tenth in a highly commendable feat.![]()

Sunny Bhatia of Delhi continued India's strong showing in Division 1 with a fifth-place finish. Rajeev Menon of Hyderabad finished sixth in Division 2, while Ritu Chadha of Mumbai finished fourth in Division 4 to complete India's list of prize winners.![]()

The results highlighted the growing strength and depth of competitive Scrabble in India, with Indian players competing successfully in one of the strongest international fields ever assembled.![]()

The Premier Division title was clinched by Australian champion David Eldar, claiming the top prize of USD 10,000.![]()
