Scrabble Bitz: 2![]()
Today we cover Lucy Thomas who’s been creating waves in the Scrabble community!![]()
Soft-spoken with grey tints in her hair, Lucy is the quintessential retired schoolteacher. After working for about 25 years as an English teacher in Abu Dhabi, Lucy retired to Kottayam about 7 years ago, to look after her grandchildren.
She recently played her first 3-day tournament that was held in Goa at the end of April. She performed very creditably, winning 10/ 25 games and beating some seasoned players. Her highest scoring game was 500+ in which she made 4 bingos.
Soon after that, at the first tournament of the Kottayam Scrabble Club held on the 9th of May, she won the first prize !
As a youngster, Lucy excelled at badminton (she represented her University) and Chess (she won a tournament in Abu Dhabi). She was introduced to Scrabble by a colleague in Abu Dhabi and because she is blessed with an excellent memory, she found her “aha!” moments when making bingos. One of her most memorable moments was when she made QUINTET in her first ever tournament – that made the entire tournament sit up and take notice of this newbie! Much like we are sitting up and paying attention to her now!
Lucy plays for the love of the words. She loves the joy of discovering a bingo and the delight of parallel plays far more than keeping score. Delighting in making compound words, Benjamins and bingos, she has found an entire community that has the same passion as she does.
Her journey has been largely the result of her daughters (one in Baroda and one in the UK) pushing her to get out of the house and do what she enjoys. Fortunately, as Theresa Joseph had set up the hugely successful Kottayam Club last year, Lucy had a place she could go and play on the weekend. As she got better at the game, she decided to take a stab at playing tournaments.
But the biggest step has been Lucy’s own – as she feels she’s re-invented herself after 60. Now she needs to get familiar with the modalities of the game (tracking, pressing the timer etc.) and, importantly, add a competitive dimension to her game.

In her lovely home in Kottayam, Lucy is kept busy with a flowering garden in front and a fruit orchard at the back. In the picture you can see her with some of her orchids.
Her next tournament is likely to be Baroda in August - that way she can play competitively AND get to spend time with her grandchildren. And in between now and then, she’s going to be training that amazing memory and learning more about tracking and timing!
Kottayam Scrabble Club plays its first 1 dayer tourney today. Organized by Teresa Joseph, founder of the club, it saw 12 members playing 4 games. It was an unrated tourney and Lucy Thomas emerged as an unbeaten winner with 4 on 4 wins followed by Jacob Thazhath and Alex Joseph with 3 wins each and only a few points spread difference.![]()
Here are the glimpses of the tourney.
VIMARSH PANDITA![]()
A young musician and poet, Vimarsh has been playing guitar and song-writing even before he was in his teens. He currently plays with Chick n Roll (no prizes for guessing what the band was eating when they came up with the name!) and though he plays mainly in Dehradun (where he lives), he has also toured Kolkata, Kasauli (Lawrence School, Sanawar) and Delhi.![]()
He's one of the few that put their right and left brains to use: he trained as a chemical engineer and earns his daily bread through data analytics. And when he’s not playing music or working, he’s working out and/ or playing football.
Always a logophile (he used to play wordament, and nowadays plays spelling bee/ wordle etc.), he naturally gravitated towards Scrabble. At his first 3-day tournament (Goa, end April
2025) armed with only his general knowledge about words (i.e. no scrabble word study), he won the Best Newbie Award: perhaps in part due to his highest word score - a commendable 9-timer (ADORNER)- and the veteran scalps he collected along the way.
His major learnings from his first tournament were a mix of strategy, gameplay and player psychology. Apart from a bunch of new words, he learned:
• people take advantage of your lack of knowledge and deliberately phoney (hmm, wonder who that was!)
• challenging words is an option that mustn’t be overused
• speed is of the essence and time saved (e.g. by drawing tiles) can be spent thinking of better words
• ‘Hot spots’ are things on the board !
• The truism of “never judge by a book by it’s cover” came home to him after he got hammered by a few ‘sweet little old ladies’ (you know who you are!)![]()
The recognition from the Best Newbie Award and his naturally competitive nature have him raring to get to the next tournament. I left him brooding over the 2025 tournament
calendar and mulling over how to up his game before the next tournament.![]()
To know more, check out his book of poetry called 'Metropolitan Mornings’ (available on Amazon), his band videos of Peach (his first group) and Chick n Roll (current band).
Introducing Scrabble-bitz: a new offering that gives quick, bite sized news soon after it happens. The tournament in Goa at the end of April got us to discover some remarkable new players and this is the first of a series about new players, new happenings and events: ![]()
